What the rates mean in rupees

  • PPF at 7.1%: ₹1.5 lakh a year for 15 years, deposited by 5 April, grows to ₹40,68,209.
  • Sukanya Samriddhi at 8.2%: ₹1.5 lakh a year for 15 years grows to about ₹71.8 lakh at 21 years.
  • KVP at 7.5%: money doubles in 115 months, a little under 9 years 7 months.
  • Rule of 72: divide 72 by the rate to get roughly how many years money takes to double. At 7.1%, about 10 years.

How often these change

Rates are reviewed every quarter and announced shortly before it starts, usually on the last working day of the previous quarter. A new rate applies to all PPF and Sukanya Samriddhi accounts from that quarter; for NSC, KVP and time deposits, the rate on the day you invest stays fixed for that deposit. The EPF rate is declared once a year.

The calculators on this site use these rates as defaults. If a rate changes mid-way through your plan, the result changes with it.
