    What Sukanya Samriddhi is

Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana is a government savings scheme for a girl child, opened by a parent or guardian at a post office or authorised bank before she turns 10. You deposit between ₹250 and ₹1.5 lakh in each financial year for the first 15 years. The account matures 21 years after it is opened. The rate for October–December 2026 is 8.2% a year.

Like PPF, it is fully tax-exempt: deposits qualify for Section 123 (old 80C) under the old tax regime, and interest and maturity are tax-free.

    The 15-and-21-year timeline

The part most people miss is the gap between the two numbers. You stop paying after 15 years, but the account keeps earning interest for six more. Those six years, with nothing going in, are where a large share of the final amount comes from.

₹1.5 lakh a year at 8.2%, deposited by 5 April each year, grows to about ₹44.8 lakh by the last deposit and about ₹71.8 lakh at maturity, against ₹22.5 lakh deposited.

    How the interest is calculated

The rule is the same as PPF. Interest is worked out every month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of the month, and credited once a year at the end of the financial year, so it compounds yearly. Depositing the year's amount by 5 April earns more than spreading it monthly: about ₹2.5 lakh more at maturity for ₹1.5 lakh a year.

    Interest for a year = Σ (balance after the 5th of each month × rate ÷ 12)

    Withdrawing at 18

Once she turns 18, or passes class 10, up to 50% of the balance at the end of the previous financial year can be withdrawn for her higher education. The account can also be closed early for her marriage after 18. The calculator shows the balance in the year she turns 18 so you can see what that 50% would be.

Does her age when you open it matter?

Not for the amount: the account runs 21 years whatever her age. It changes how old she is at each step. Opened at birth, the account matures when she is 21; opened at 10, when she is 31. Set her age above and the dates and ages update.
